Have Your Say Shelburne!

Tell us your experiences with heavy truck traffic in the Town of Shelburne

For many years, The Town of Shelburne has asked the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) for a truck by-pass for Provincial Highway 10 and 89. The Town of Shelburne will be attending the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference in January, 2019. A delegation from Shelburne will be meeting with the Minister of Transportation (MTO) on January 28, 2019, to share and express concerns and ideas about the need for a truck by-pass.

To help us share your opinions with MTO about heavy truck traffic in our downtown and community we want to hear from you.

    Truck traffic

We live on Main Street. The truck traffic is insane. I'm afraid of what it is doing to our foundation. Our windows shake and will eventually also need replacing. Besides these points I witness many trucks traveling way too fast and there are children who use that route for school. This problem should have been looked after years ago!

    Thunder crashing around

I enjoy the peace and quiet of the town, the friendliness and willingness of its residents to help each other out. It's great the way everyone says hi and smiles. I enjoy being able to walk to most things in town. And to walk the dogs trough town. Sometimes I settle outside the cafes and pubs that have outdoor places to sit, to enjoy being outside and enjoy a beverage, maybe do some sketching! Time after time the peace and quiet is shattered by the sounds and motions of the trucks barging through town. The sound is horrible, never mind... Continue reading

    Couple of Issues

by DLW, almost 6 years ago

Safety is an issue. I live on Main St. and many of these large trucks are driving too fast on town roads. SPS does the best they can and I know they address this as they can but it continues. The other likely relates to the safety issue.  They realize they are too fast and on come the engine brakes making excessive noise at all hours of the night. There is too much truck traffic for benefit of both residents and eliminating the 10/89 turn downtown will help the truckers as well.

So many times I have seen trucks blow through reds at main corner, Petro Canada and 124. A couple of easy bypass routes exist with some road upgrading and support from  Melanchthon, Amaranth and Mono. Glad to see we have motion of support from County.

I grew up in this town.  As teens we used to watch numbers of vehicles need to back up on Owen Sound St at the main intersection (only lights in town at the time) so the trucks could turn.   (almost was hit in the phone boot a couple times!)       Now we have the 'Stop here on red light' sign and line, (often not obeyed) but as a person who has worked, for the last number of years, at one of the shops in town at the top of the 'T' of that intersection, I can say with certainty that there... that a bypass would certinally be a good thing for downtown Shelburne. I suppose going north on #124 @ #89 and up to #17th sideroad and then left over to #10 and then right up through Dundalk would be the most logicial way to go.

    First Ave E

by Phil, almost 6 years ago

I live on First Ave East and the heavy trucks have started to drive up our street delivering to Foodland and Giant Tiger. I believe it is against the bylaws that trucks are not supposed to drive up Greenwood Street. The amount of vehicles on First Ave. is extremely heavy at any given time during the week.

    Traffic

by SteveN, almost 6 years ago

The traffic downtown in general is an issue. However, the large transport trucks do make it more difficult to access parking on the main street as they line up at the light and block many of the parking spots as well as impeding the flow of traffic through the downtown core. There are certainly many issues with downtown traffic that have nothing to do with trucks. However, it may be beneficial to the town, whether that be businesses and/or shoppers to remove transport trucks from the downtown and provide another route for them around it. Of course, this will also... Continue reading
